Trip to France (Bourgogne-Spring 2010)...Visit to Olivier Leflaive

We had the most gorgeous day here in Burgundy today! I heard the weather had been horrible here all last week. So, it seems like we brought the nice weather with us.

This morning, we drove down to Puligny-Monthrachet to visit Olivier Leflaive, who are the big domaine and negociant. They make wines from over 60 appellations every year. They also run a restaurant and small hotel at the same location. It's a very beautiful place.

Their sommelier, Simon (he is from England), met with us at the winery and we first walked to the vineyards together.

Just behind the domaine are the widely spread vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The view was magnificent. Puligny-Montrachet's soil contains mainly limestone. The more higher up you walk to (toward Grand Crus), the more limestone the soil contains. Simon gave us a piece of rock from the vineyard to literally taste it. It indeed tasted like licking the minerally ice. The minerality of Puligny's wine totally comes from the soil.

The great vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet...I was so happy to see these "great" Grand Crus. The vines were so thick.

We walked back to the domaine and Olivier Leflaive himself met with us. He gave us a tour of the winery to show us how their wines were produced. Olivier is such a sweet and funny guy!

Wine tasting lunch took place in their restaurant. We tasted 14 wines of their 2006-2008 vintages, including 1er Crus of Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet.

Lunch was so delicious also.

It was a very nice tasting lunch. After the lunch, I was so sleepy and wanted to take a nap.
