On our first night in Taipei, we had dinner at a traditional Taiwanese restaurant called, Umeko.
Sunday night in Taipei seemed very busy. There were many cars and motorcycles. We got to the restaurant after a short 10-minute walk from our hotel.
There were just two of us and my mom doesn't normally eat much lately as she gets older, but I tried to order as many dishes as we could eat. I just wanted to taste the very local dishes! The restaurant has been in business since 1965 and the space had a nice rustic ambience. We started the dinner with their house plum wine.
Stewed wheat gluten, and soy-braised pork belly. Great start.
Pan-steamed clams.
Oyster pancakes, and mapo tofu.
Stir-fried water spinach. And, soup noodle with minced pork, which is called 坦仔麺 (I don't know the English pronunciation) was so simple and so good. It's basically a Taiwanese ramen and is a very popular dish in this country.
Almond jelly and fried mochi with peanut powder.
Our first night dinner turned out to be a great success! I loved the simple rustic flavors of each dish. The seasoning was not too heavy and just right. The service was so sweet, too.
I felt so happy to be back in this great city with wonderful food culture.
After we returned to the hotel. We had cocktails at the bar. I enjoyed the Singapore Sling in Taipei.
